Painting the wheels, gloss or flat?
« on: February 10, 2014, 11:40:14 pm »
So I am a little undecided on to paint the wheels gloss or flat?

Seen a few Beasts with painted wheels (FatAberts white frame and black wheels, nice bike btw) and a few others.  Even polished (FatAlberts!), which I thought about doing but, the bling is not my style!!

I have the green Beast with black stickers (custom),  and everything else either lime green or black (with exception of the seat, they didn't have a all black seat).

GLOSS or FLAT BLACK??  The only reason I mentioned gloss is because it would easy clean/wipe clean. Also the hubs, handle bar, chain guard, and seat post are all gloss black, so it would all flow and go together.

Here is my Beast:

Here is what it could look like with flat wheels:

i would go with the Gloss Black....Only because its always a Deeper Black & also , all those BEASTs out there that do have black wheels , they are all Flat Black or Satin Black........No one really does them Gloss Black......IT WILL BE A KILLER on your BEAST......cause it seems like your staying with solid colors & that will go with the Flow of your setup....Hope that helped.....just my LiL input !!! .......( i almost did my wheels Gloss Black the same day when i 1st got my Fat Albert )

So I painted my wheels gloss black and I really like the look except that the paint must have been old as I went to spray a second coat about 30 min later and it looks like crap. It has begin to separate and orange peel. Now if I leave it like this it will bug me for as long as it's there, so now I must remove the both front and rear wheel, remove both tires, tubes... And use paint stripper to remove paint!! Uhhhh.

I have painted so many things and this has never happened. I properly prepped both wheel and it still came out horrible.
Well now to put some work into it.

it was some rust oleum gloss paint. don't think it was temperature but who knows. I know I had the paint for a while. now got to get some paint stripper and go to work on it. sanding would take too long.

Spent a few hours with some professional paint stripper and got almost all of it off. But there is still some little spots that will require a little sanding.

It is. That's what I get for trying to rush things.

I was washing them with soap and water and this started to show.

I scrubbed over it with the sponge a few more times and it seems like it was painted or glued down.

Thinking of calling Pacific Cycles and see if they can warranty this as I have only had my Beast for a month and rode only a couple miles.

Called Pacific and they are warranting the tire! I know people talk crap about the Wally World brands but the times that I dealt with pacific for warranty issues, I have gotten nothing but great customer service.

Finally got one wheel done. Paint stripper did a good job but still required a lot of sanding to get it to my standards before paint. The result really paid off. Now the front wheel is being a pita.  With the rear I did 3 coats of paint, which came great. Then last night as I am putting the 3rd coat on the front wheel, the paint decides to texture!! WTF???  Spent a few hours again sanding and removing the paint again. Hopefully today everything will go smooth so I can finally get this beast back on the road again!!
