SRAM Rear Sprocket Woes
« on: April 18, 2016, 10:52:29 am »
I purchased a Green Mongoose Beast I got on sale for 89.99 at WallyMart.

Here are the mods thus far.

So I got new box park style handlebars
http://goo.gl/ghPnaU
http://goo.gl/00lnNH

28.6mm Custom Solid Steel Layback seat post from Slowriderz
Pic Included. I ordered one with a 50deg angle. Its perfect!

New Pedals
http://goo.gl/n1IWns
New Chain
http://goo.gl/p1cUCU
Chain tool
http://goo.gl/8B06iM
And an SRAM 22T Sprocket
http://goo.gl/rU8aJM
http://goo.gl/cdQVDU

Got the handlebars, pedal, and layback seat post all installed. Took off the chain and the 18T sprocket and hit a snag.
The SRAM sprocket has three bumps on the side facing the spokes (the convex side.) Those bumps don't let me pop the retaining ring back in. The convex side sits up too high now. Totally bummed!

The original sprocket is KT brand. So the safe bet is to get a KT brand 22T sprocket. I totally love the look of the SRAM though.. Its too bad the bumps won't let me get the ring in.

Does anyone have any experience with KT brand sprockets vs Shimano and Sturmey Archer? Ive read that the Sturmey Archer ones are actually made by some other company in Taiwan and the new ones only come in Chrome. Any black ones are old unsold stock or fakes. I have no idea if there is indeed a difference in quality between any of the brands and would love your opinion.

So I figured out what the issue is. There is a dust/dirt cap or ring that goes under the sprocket between the sprocket and the hub. It has just enough thickness that it doesn't allow the retaining ring to set inside its groove.

Im guessing the dust cap is necessary to keep dirt out of the ball bearings on the hub.. so either I file down the bumps on the convex side or just get a shimano hub and call it a day.
