Title: Buying a Mongoose soon! Need advice!
Post by: hitdr9 on May 28, 2017, 08:38:51 pm
1st post, just joined!

OK. I'm new, so be gentle. I'm 6'5", 260 lbs. Main bike use will be dirt jumps, BMX tracks, large skate park jumping with son. Less trail riding, so I need something I won't tear up after 1 trip to the park.

I'm leaning towards the Hitch and Malus. Want freewheel, no suspension, etc. Like the silver paint on Malus; prefer the drilled rims on Hitch (look and weight). 1st problem is that there are no Hitch/Malus/Dolomite models I can test ride before purchasing. I'm taller and the 26' configuration may not be optimal, but I like the BMX cruiser design  I have ridden the Beast and other single speed fatties a few times but I know these are completely different animals. Felt very heavy (steel frame/rims), hard to control at slow speeds. Need wider bars with 3/5 rise.

I'm thinking full fat tire bike for strength and durability sake but... curveball thrown. I have also ridden the 27.5 Gavan. Do you guys consider this the fat tire wanna-be? I liked the ride, bar height/width, weight (aluminum frame/rims?) and handling of this bike, but I only have the Beast to compare it to. I could throw it around the whole store pretty easily compared to the Beast, but I'm afraid that I will pretzel many rims with the plus sized Gavan.

Tried to do as much research on all of the Mongoose fat tire and plus size models as possible, and that's what lead me to the holy grail of forums!
(So awesome. Had an original Mongoose BMX in the '80's. Loved it. Need another one to keep up with my son)

I'm looking to get something soon for the summer, so let'r rip. Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!
